Roses
I like flowers as much as the next person, but am not a fanatic. However, when it comes to carving them, I have found that they present a test of my abilities with which nothing else I have yet found can compare. Roses have become a passion, with their layered, fragile petals and endless variety. I have carved them in many different sizes and types, as you will see here.

This page is very graphics intensive. Please be patient while it loads.
Part of an ongoing project, this is one of a set of 4 roses carved of Utah Pipestone. The stems are hand-carved of mahogany and contain a single soapstone thorn each, also hand-carved.

This White Crystal Alabaster Rose was created at my partner’s request and is the second in the pair she keeps.
This was my second rose, for my sister, Tracy. A completely different strain of rose than I had done previously, it presented different inspirations.
This was my first 3-d rose, for my partner, done in raw American alabaster. I look at it now and it seems thick and a bit clumsy. It’s life-size, and complete with a mahogany stem and alabaster thorn.
These three rosebuds were my first experiment with freehand carving this type of pattern. There was no planning, no drawing of lines, involved. They are 1.75”-2” in length and 1”-1.5” in width on approximately 11” mahogany stems. The stones used are Black Chlorite, Translucent Alabaster and Domestic Alabaster.

“For My Love, Indecision.” There are 2 alabaster roses and 2 pink soapstone, each approximately 1 inch in diameter. They are set into a miniature candy box I tore apart for pattern and recreated. The box was then covered with fabric, which was no small feat. Each rose is dated and signed and set in it’s own chenille “wrapper.”
